Though awkward in every other way out of the water, he discovered that he had an unusual talent for disc golf. He had never known a name so they called him Mr. Black and he was gaining a reputation. The heat was unbearable and he had to have regular hosings to keep going. He liked the admiration, but he spent every night soaking in the tub to recuperate from the game. Maybe this was not the life for him. He thought of things before he left. He thought of his comrades who accepted him though his was nothing like them. Maybe it was time that he tried to find them. Maybe it was time to return.

When he left he knew he must return to the music. Music was his life and playing again would relieve him of the loneliness. Yet no one wanted to hear him play. The great organs that could be found in every hall were gone. It was all soulless repetition of performances that could never exist on a real stage. And the audiences had no understanding of real music. How could they ask him for Bruno Mars when he offered them La Traviata? He felt the old rage building again. This could not be. Perhaps this is not his world after all. Perhaps he needed to find his way back to the others, where his music brought them all joy and beauty. He must return.

The days and nights seemed endless and dull, all except the mornings and afternoons, those brief times when he was truly useful. No one dared to cross in front of him, which kept the children safe. He loved the children. He liked their smiles. He felt their tears, each of them struggling to make sense of the world and their place in it. He knew what that was like. They accepted him, even giving occasional hugs and scratchy crayon drawings. It helped, but all the other hours hung like chains about him. Maybe it was time to return to those who truly understood. Perhaps, when school was done, he would leave his vest and sign and return into the shadows with the closest thing he'd ever had to friends.
